2022 Oscar Fashion Review

By Jess Orloski

No stage is greater than that of the Oscars, where every year celebrities can show off their film achievements while also showcasing their style. It is an opportunity for each individual to accentuate their public persona through high-fashion, dramatic looks. This year has been the first more or less “normal” award show, with COVID-19 restrictions being loosened per the CDC. It’s no surprise that attendees made sure to show up with their fits and broke some rules (literally), changing the Oscars red carpet game forever.

After studying all the looks from Sunday night, here are my top ten favorite outfits from the night, in no particular order.

1. Timothee Chalamet in Louis Vuitton - Getty Images

Hollywood’s “it” boy showed up like a total rockstar by opting for a bare sternum ordained by one small silver chain and another dangling on his chest. His black, sparkly sequined jacket made the look all the more bad-ass. I hope the Dune star takes more fashion risks on the red carpet like this in the future.

2. Demi Singleton in Miu Miu - Jay L. Clendenin

This strapless lilac dress with embroidered flowers is so elegant and gives 90’s, Garden of Eden vibes. Her silver sandals are also from Miu Miu, paired with minimal rings and a magical high-pony fishtail. I am obsessed with this look.

3. Simu Lee in Versace - Getty Images

This custom fire-engine red Versace suit turned heads all night. The suit is paired with a black bow tie, a white button-up, and a matching red watch. I love how Lee stepped out of his comfort zone for this look.

4. Tiffany Haddish in Dolce and Gabbana - Getty Images

Sparkling bright on Haddish’s chest is a stunning Pomellato necklace, reminiscent of the one from the Titanic. The emerald gem matches her strapless dress adorned with sparkling embellishments, falling straight down into a train.

5. Lily James in Atelier Versace - Getty Images

Pam & Tommy breakout star Lily James combined delicate and sexy with her dress. The baby pink lace dress effortlessly shaped James, and fell into a beautiful train at the end. She accentuated the look with a pearl and gold accented necklace.

6. Emilia Jones - Getty Images

Emilia Jones had one of the most gorgeous dresses I’ve ever seen. The gold ombre gown entirely embroidered with Swarovski crystals featured a sultry cut-out. She went for a simple bun and accessories to keep the focus on the dress.

7. Kodi Smit-McPhee in Bottega Veneta - Getty Images

This baby blue double-breasted custom tuxedo combined with the chunky platform boots of the same color is what makes this look so unique. It creates such amodern silhouette and pushes past the general-male black tuxedo. The look is polished and I love it.

8. Saniyya Sidney in Giorgio Armani - Gilbert Flores for Variety

Saniyya Sidney wore this beautiful aqua strapless Giorgio Armani Privé gown with blue and pink appliqués. The bottom of the skirt almost reminds me of cotton candy, and when she twirled it looked exactly that way. I think the colors are so perfect for spring and have been trending recently.

9. Zendaya in Valentino - Getty Images

The Dune cast came out barring their stomachs, and I’m here for it. Zendaya wore this extra-cropped white collared blouse paired with a shimmering silver skirt with a beautiful flounce at the end. It was sexy, modern, and classy all at once.

10. Billie Eilish in Gucci - Getty Images

I love Billie’s style, and this look has to be one of my favorites. It is so effortless, yet high fashion and edgy. Paired with Fred Leighton jewelry, it is a dark but sweet look with the black ruffles.
