kenzie’s spring 21 playlist (and breakdown!)

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

by Kenzie Draper

As the semester draws to a close, I’d like to present the first of its kind: Kenzie’s Spring 21 playlist!

These 25 songs encapsulate my second-to-last term, one comprised of highs and lows, quarantine, Minecraft, so much schoolwork, Marvel movies, making the best of it, and a lot of anime.

Playlist Breakdown:

Note: many of these songs are instrumental or non-english. I urge you to give them a try

and broaden your music scope!

This song represents how I felt the state of the world was at. I also thought it was incredibly romantic and unlike any other song.

#2-5

These represent the month or so where I ONLY listened to my “soft ghibli” playlist. Anyone who follows me on Spotify who saw me listen to this playlist on repeat…. No, you didn’t. Enjoy the sounds of pure escapism into the beauty and simplicity of Miyazaki and Hisaishi.

#6-11

The next group of songs arrives straight from my “Where the hell have you been, loca?!” playlist. If you’ve been keeping up with Tik Tok, you’ll know that Jacob says this to Bella in New Moon, the second Twilight film. Though the movies aren’t exactly masterpieces, I will defend to my death that the soundtrack is.

#12-19

These songs belong on this list every semester; they’re some of my tried-and-true constants that happened to be played a bit more this semester. If you haven’t listened to any of them yet, it’s essential that you do now.

#20-25

The final grouping: anime. These three shows pretty much took over my life this semester. #20-22 hail from Attack on Titan, a show I’d spend every Sunday afternoon watching with my friend Lola (I also read the entire manga this semester in preparation for the final chapter this Friday). Song #23 is from BANANA FISH, a show that you should only watch if you’re ready to cry for three days as I did. The playlist finishes with two songs from Jujutsu Kaisen and they’re bops. All fantastic shows and soundtracks I recommend!

Closing Note

This collection of songs will become a time capsule of these few months. What a wild, wild semester we've all had. I hope you enjoy the music that made mine.

However; the playlist isn't necessarily finished yet– we still have three weeks! Check back in May. Maybe there will be more songs to this semester (probably Sakura Kiss from Ouran Host Club.... oh well).
